New puppies arrive in Utah

We had 2 new puppies in training arrive in Utah on December 19th.

This is Nova, she is being raised by Mike and Nancy in Layton.....

Oct, Nov and Dec activities

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 29TH

     This is going to be a "dynamic duo" evening as we will be having our annual "Howl-a-ween Party" combined with Wallis' and Basha's "Bon Voyage Party". Wall-E and Basha are turning in next week to enter their Advanced Training at the Southwest Campus in Oceanside, CA. Please come and wish them well. We'll also be having our annual costume party and pot luck supper to celebrate my favorite holiday - "Howl-a-ween". Puppies are encouraged to dress up (I've heard Nuke's costume is going to be the bomb!) and their raisers can, too (if they wish). Dona will supply the meat trays and everyone else is encouraged to bring a "side" dish - salads, desserts, chips, etc. It's going to be "spook-tacular"! We'll start promptly at 5:00pm and we'll have to be done by 6:00pm, so that Dona's next class can get started. Hope you can come!! There will be NO Puppy Class on November 5th as many of us will be enroute to California to attend the turn-in ceremony of Wallis and Basha and also to celebrate the graduation of the Heim family and their new Skilled Companion dog. So remember......NO PUPPY CLASS ON NOVEMBER 5TH. We will all meet up on Wednesday, November 12th at the kennel. See you then.

Heim's Congratulations Party

The Heim's are going to Team Training to receive their Skilled Companion Dog from Canine Companions for Independence.  Here are some pictures from the Congratulation's party.

     The LINC Center is a care facility for adults with disabilities. It's a great socialization for both Puppy Raisers and dogs. We often go to lunch afterwards which is another good socialization for the puppies in training. If you've never been......it's worth the drive! Hope you can make it on the 29th!

June Activites

Tuesday June 24th:  LINC Center visit - 862 South Main Street, Brigham City (behind Taco Time) 10:30am - For about an hour we visit with the clients and usually have lunch at Taco Time afterwards.

Thursday June 26th: Spring Provider Conference - Alta View High School (11055 South Hawk Highway (1000 East), Sandy, Utah) - 9:00am-5:00pm.  This is a BIG Resource Fair for Providers, Support Coordinators and Division of Services for People with Disabilities staff.

Saturday June 28th: Puppy Workshop at Alan Lang & Charlene Palmer residence (4529 South Gilead Way, Salt Lake City) Stu Wahrenbrock, Puppy Program Manager and Becca Gordon from Canine Companions for Independence will be on hand to answer questions and give valuable information to those that attend.  Check in is from 9:30am-10:00am with the Workshop beginning promptly at 10:00am.  Breakfast and lunch will be provided and afterwards, if you would like to stay, Alan will be cooking brats and burgers.

Directions can be found on GOOGLE or MAP QUEST. For folks coming from the NORTH, feel free to meet at the Kaysville Park ‘n Ride (turn right at the end of the Kaysville Exit - #328) by 8:30am and we can carpool and caravan from there. Everyone is invited and encouraged to attend – Graduates, Puppy Raisers, Puppy Sitters, Applicants and those wanting to find out more about Canine Companions are welcome. It is definitely worth the time. See you there!

Friday July 4th: FRIDAY, JULY 4th – Chapter President, Glenna Foremaster has made arrangements for the Wasatch Champions to have a booth at the Plain City Fourth of July Celebration. If you would like to help man the booth, please let Glenna know. More information will follow.

ANGLEMAN WALK

Mid-May -- Information on the way! 

     If ANY of our chapter members do an "Outreach" (Cub Scout Pack Meeting, a school presentation or "show and tell" opportunity, speaking to a civic organization or business, etc.), PLEASE let me know. I report to Beck Hein at Canine Companions each month (mostly) and she documents the information and sends it to the National Headquarters, so that they can see what the state of Utah is up to (in a good way). So if you're out there "spreading the word" and showing off your pup, let me know so that your efforts can be counted.

IMAGINE INDEPENDENCE

When: Thursday, April 10th

Where: Union Station in Ogden

Time: 5:00pm - 9:00pm      (Of course most of us will be there ALL DAY!!) 

     This is our BIG fundraiser, folks, and it's important for ALL of us to get involved in any way we can. It's not just about the money (well, yah, it really is....), but it's also about coming together and working hard to make this event one of the biggest and best that the Wasatch Front has ever seen. It's the "Outreach Event" of the year! We'll have ample opportunity to show off our pups and share with our guests how these dogs can make a difference in an individual's life. Our guest speakers are going to be fabulous (all graduate teams), the food, fantastic, and the items in the Silent Auction are going to "knock your socks off"! It is the place to be on April 10th! Invite your family, friends and co-workers! It will be an evening to remember! Hope to see you there!

HILL AIR FORCE BASE SPECIAL NEEDS SUMMIT

When: Thursday, March 20th

Where: Hill Air Force Base - The Landing" - Building #450 - Directions to come later
Time: 10:00am - 2:00pm     (Set up at 9:00am)

      From Marilyn - "This is one of my favorite events (I'm taking the day off for this one!) and is a great way to share Canine Companions for Independence with military families who have or know of families who have children with disabilities."

 

     The "Summit" is a wonderful opportunity to make people aware of our organization and introduce them to puppies in training. In the past, our booth has been one of the most popular (because, you know we have the best props!) not only with families seeking information, but with the other vendors as well. It's the best!! Can't think of a better way to spend four hours......being with the pups and spreading the word about Canine Companions. Hope you can make it! 

     We've requested that our booth be in a corner (so that the pups may have some room to "stretch out" and also to be near the "Freedom Riders". Kids, dogs and horses.....a winning combination to say the least (that's how I see it!). Make sure to bring clean-up material (just in case) and some water for your four legged pal.  

     The "Summit" will be providing lunch for two people, but can be purchased by all others. A good time to practice "under" and those house manners. It seems like the dining area was just down the hall from where the "Summit" was taking place. We can check that out later. Logistics are very important when your puppy is on the younger side. I'm always on the look out these days for nearby exit doors. Just in case --- 

     If you DON'T have base privileges and are planning to attend the "Special Needs Summit", Marilyn will need to have your current State Driver's License information as soon as possible, so that you can get on base. It's going to be so much fun! Hope you can make it!

Save the date!  On December 19th at 10am the Wasatch Champions Puppy Raisers are all invited to attend a party for the folks at LINC, an assisted living daycare facility for adults with handicaps.  Dona will be bringing the 35 custom blankets she made for each individual and we'll all be Santa's and help pass them out.  They are so excited to have us come and to meet the puppies.

Hi Puppy Pals!!

     This is my last month for socializing with you all, so I'm inviting you to some "fun stuff" in Kaysville. I know it's a long drive for some you, but if you can make it, that would be great! If not, that's ok, too. I think my mom is planning a "Bon Voyage" party at my last Puppy Class (10/30?).      In late August I found myself attending the 2013 Volunteer Leadership Conference at Canine Companions' National Headquarters in Santa Rosa, California. I am not a "meeting person" at all, so to be attending a 2 1/2 day conference was stepping way out of my comfort zone...BIG TIME. The trip was an early birthday gift from my daughter and her family and although so thoughtful, I was already having doubts about sitting for long stretches of time, being bored out of mind. It's not that I didn't want to attend, I just wanted to be there on my own terms. I wanted to see the campus, see dogs and meet people I'd read posts from on e-mails and blogs. I wanted to find "relatives" of the "W" litter (Jolee/Luca) and I wanted to be with folks who loved dogs and this program as much as I do. I wanted to share the excitement I get when picking up a new puppy, doing an outreach presentation or filling out my monthly Progress Report........okay, maybe not that last one. I guess I went to California to see where I fit into this big jig-saw puzzle they call Canine Companions for Independence.
